Buford is well known today for its top-rated school system and sports programs. Located in Gwinnett County and a small portion of Hall County, it is home to the Mall of Georgia and Lake Lanier Islands. The historic downtown area is a popular location for local shopping and restaurants. The City hosts numerous concerts, festivals, parades and events throughout the year. It is about 45 minutes from downtown Atlanta and 45 minutes from the Northeast GA Mountains making it an ideal location to live in Georgia. The population of Buford grew rapidly in the early 1900s due to the thriving leather industry and its location as a railroad stop. Led by the Bona Allen Company, “The Leather City” was a large producer of saddles, horse collars, bridles and shoes. Tannery Row was once a shoe factory and now houses Tannery Row Artist Colony which houses galleries and studios for artists. Buildings and remnants of this old railway town are still visible throughout the historic downtown area.
